How Are You Doing? A Gentle Check-In for These Heavy Times

My dear friends, how are you really doing?

These days, it feels like the world is stretching us thin โ€” emotionally, mentally, spiritually. Iโ€™ve been waking up lately with that familiar tightness in my chest, that old visitor anxiety, gripping me just like it used to in years past. And I know Iโ€™m not alone. Many of you might be navigating a tangled web of emotions: fear, grief, uncertainty, alongside the daily rhythms of life that keep spinning regardless.

So today, I want to pause and check in with you. No grand advice or solutionsโ€”just a moment to say: I see you. And if you want, Iโ€™m here to share the weight.

Passing the Stress Along

When I was struggling in my twenties, a dear friend Lina offered a simple, yet powerful comfort. She said, โ€œGive me your stress, give me your stress,โ€ while motioning with her hands as if to pull it from me and hold it for a moment. That gesture, that invitation, felt like a balm to my weary heart.

So, I want to offer the same to you. If you feel burdened, overwhelmed, or just plain exhausted by everything swirling around you, leave a comment or a message here. Hand me your stress. Iโ€™ll gladly hold some of it with you, if only for a little while.

The Light in Small Things

Amidst the heaviness, itโ€™s important to notice those little sparks of light โ€” the glimmers that remind us life can still surprise us with softness and joy.

Maybe you caught the scent of spring flowers this morning. Maybe you bit into a juicy purple plum and the burst of flavor made you smile. Perhaps you spotted a tiny dog trotting happily down the street, blissfully unaware of the worldโ€™s troubles.

If you have these small moments to share, please do. They matter more than we often realize.

Five Questions to Reflect On

If youโ€™d like, here are some gentle questions you can ponder or share with me and others. Theyโ€™re simple, but sometimes the simplest questions open the door to connection:

  1. Something youโ€™re looking forward to: Whatโ€™s a bright spot on your horizon, no matter how small?
  2. A worry thatโ€™s keeping you up at night: Whatโ€™s that persistent thought or fear that lingers?
  3. Your current or childhood nickname: What name do you carry from the past or present that holds meaning?
  4. A TV show youโ€™re watching or book youโ€™re reading: What stories are keeping you company these days?
  5. Something you like about yourself, big or small: Whatโ€™s one thingโ€”no matter how tinyโ€”that you appreciate about who you are?

A Moment of Joy

On a lighter note, I have to share a little joy thatโ€™s been making me laugh lately. My 11-year-old Anton has been delighting in slang, and the word โ€œcheeksโ€ is his new favorite. Heโ€™ll say things like, โ€œMy new haircut is cheeks,โ€ or โ€œI did cheeks on my humanities quiz.โ€ Itโ€™s hilarious, especially since he uses it interchangeably with โ€œbuns.โ€ Such simple words, but they bring a burst of playful energy into everyday life.

An Invitation to Compassion

In these difficult times, itโ€™s also crucial to remember those who are suffering beyond what many of us can imagine. My dear friend Linsey has organized a fundraiser to support children and families in Gaza. If youโ€™re able, please consider joining us in donating. Thereโ€™s also a silent auction featuring some wonderful itemsโ€”adding up to a sort of grown-up talent show thatโ€™s heartwarming and hopeful.

Letโ€™s Keep Talking

So, my loves, how are you? Truly. Iโ€™m here, listening, holding space for your stories, your worries, and your joys.

Sending you the biggest, warmest hug through these words. Thank you for being here, for reading, for sharing a piece of yourself. It means more than I can say.

Letโ€™s keep the conversation going.
