I have spent eight years judging products from a beauty desk, and no category has humbled me like fragrance. You can swatch a foundation, patch-test a serum, sit with a shade under the light. You cannot smell through a screen. So when I finally built my own rotation, I did what I should have done years ago: stopped shopping by brand, and started by scent family.
Everything below is a bottle I have actually worn, or gift-wrapped for someone else, from soft clean-skin scents to the warm ones that read like dessert on a cold night. If you have ever stood in front of a fragrance wall (shopping for the husband, I mean) and come out with a stack of overpriced samples and zero answers, this is for you.

There is no “best” perfume — the one that fits you
Fragrance is the most personal product you will ever wear. It is invisible, and yet it is the first thing a room remembers. One woman’s dinner-party mistake is another woman’s signature, and no single bottle wins for everyone.
That said, some scents are reliable crowd-pleasers. Clean-skin scents like Glossier You and Phlur Missing Person get compliments on almost anyone I have watched them on, which is what makes them such safe starting points. And the smartest way to shop is by scent family — fresh, floral, sweet, clean — not by the hype on the bottle.
My tested favorites, by scent family

Everyday signature: Glossier You
Warm, skin-like, amber musk. Mid-range.
The closest thing I have found to your own skin, bottled and slightly better. Glossier You is warm, subtle, personal — exactly why it works as a daily signature people keep asking about but can never quite name.
It does not announce itself, and that is the trick. In a closed office, or riding shotgun in the car, it reads as you, not as a perfume. This is the one I grab on days when I want to smell like I slept eight hours.
Clean skin scent: Phlur Missing Person
Clean musk, skin, cotton. Mid-range.
The clean-scent that kept trending kept trending for a reason. Missing Person smells like just-washed skin and clean sheets. Close to the skin, intimate, soft — not perfume-y in the least. This is my “I want to smell expensive without looking like I tried” reach.
Fresh floral: Marc Jacobs Daisy
Fresh, floral, classic. Mid-range.
A modern classic for a reason. Daisy is bright, fresh, feminine, and not heavy in any way. It is the easiest floral entry point I can recommend — something you can wear daily without thinking about it and it still looks polished.
Fresh & unisex: Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
Fresh, mineral, airy. Splurge.
That sharp, just-returned-from-the-coast freshness, in a bottle. It is clean and mineral, not sweet. It layers beautifully over other scents, and reads quietly luxurious — which is the whole point of Jo Malone.
Sweet gourmand: Ariana Grande Cloud
Sweet, creamy, vanilla. Affordable.
If warm, sweet, cozy is your lane, Cloud is a genuine crowd-pleaser at a very approachable price. Creamy vanilla and coconut make it comforting and long-wearing, and it is one of the most complimented affordable bottles I have had on my desk.
Fruity: NEST New York Watermelon Peony
Juicy, fruity, floral. Mid-range.
Fresh watermelon and peony make this the perfect warm-weather scent. It is fun and flirty without being cloying, and the perfume oil format keeps it close to the skin and long-lasting.
Berry: Burberry Her
Berry, sweet, playful. Mid-range.
Bright dark berries over a soft musky base. Burberry Her is youthful and playful, but still polished enough to hold up in a boardroom. It sits exactly in that fruity, grown-up middle ground that works day or night.
Rozy classic: Chloe Signature
Rose, powdery, elegant. Mid-range.
If you want a timeless, grown-up rose, this is it. It is elegant and powdery without smelling dated. The kind of scent that quietly says you are together, and works beautifully at events.
Fruity-floral: Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey
Peachy, floral, warm. Splurge.
Juicy nectarine and honey make for the warmer, sweeter Jo Malone. It feels sunny and a little indulgent. Like all Jo Malones it layers well, so you can build it under a fresher scent for something custom.
Body mist: Sol de Janeiro Cheirosa 62
Pistachio, caramel, vanilla. Affordable.
The famous Bum Bum scent, in mist form: warm pistachio, salted caramel, vanilla. It is affordable, I will not lie, addictive, and perfect for reapplying through the day, or layering under a stronger perfume for a cozy gourmand finish.
How to choose by scent family
Choosing by scent family is the shortcut that finally makes shopping for fragrance work. Find your lane, then explore within it.
- Fresh: clean, airy, mineral — think Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Great for daytime and warm weather.
- Clean skin: soft, intimate, barely-there musk — like Glossier You or Missing Person. The easiest to wear.
- Floral: pretty and feminine — like Daisy or Chloe. Timeless and event-friendly.
- Sweet gourmand: warm, cozy, edible — like Cloud or Sol de Janeiro. Best for fall and night.
How to find your signature scent
Perfume smells different on skin than on paper, and it changes as it settles, so give it time. This is the method I follow:
- Test on skin, never just a paper strip. Your skin chemistry changes every bottle.
- Wait 30 minutes. What you smell in the first spray is a lie. The dry-down is the real scent.
- Try one or two at a time. Any more, and your nose stops sending reports.
- Live with it a day before committing. The right one is the one you keep reaching for — and the ones people keep asking about.
A signature scent is a quiet confidence trick. Once you find it, you stop performing put-together and start just being it.
How to make perfume last longer
Even the best bottle falls flat by lunch if you do not treat it right. A few habits that actually work:
- Moisturize first. Fragrance clings to hydrated skin. It disappears fast on dry skin.
- Spray the pulse points. Wrists, neck, behind the ears — the heat lifts the scent all day.
- Never rub your wrists together. It crushes the top notes and shortens the wear.
- Layer with a matching body mist or lotion for the longest wear.
On the science side of this, the FDA’s own materials on fragrance in cosmetics and the American Academy of Dermatology’s skin care basics both back up the moisturize-before-you-spray side of things.
FAQ
What perfume gets the most compliments?
Clean, warm skin scents. They are flattering on almost everyone and read expensive without being overpowering. Glossier You, Phlur Missing Person, and Ariana Grande Cloud come up in almost every polite conversation I have about fragrance. Close-to-the-skin scents feel personal, so people notice them without being able to name them.
What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
Concentration. Eau de parfum has more fragrance oil, so it is stronger and lasts longer — often through the day. Eau de toilette is lighter and fades faster, and is honestly better for daytime and hot weather. Want longevity? Choose edp. Running an edp? Reapply through the day.
How many sprays is right?
Two to four for most eau de parfums, on the pulse points. Stronger, longer-wearing scents need fewer. Mists and light EDTs can take a couple more. The goal is a scent bubble, not a fire alarm — if people flinch when you enter a room, you went overboard. Start light and add if needed.
What is the best affordable perfume?
Ariana Grande Cloud and the Sol de Janeiro mists. Both punch well above their price, and body mists in general are a budget-friendly way to smell great and reapply easily. Prioritize a scent family you love and decent longevity over a big brand name — inexpensive scents can perform beautifully.
The bottom line
Fragrance is the most personal thing you can wear, because it leaves before you do. The right scent does not just smell good — the second you put it on, you feel more like yourself. Do not overthink it. Start from the scent family you already love, test a couple properly, and let your favorite reveal itself over a few wears.
a note from the studio
I used to think buying perfume was a confidence exercise. Turns out it is an editing exercise — the same one I run on dozens of products each month, just with a sprayer instead of a dropper. Cut the options down to the ones that actually work, and then stop shopping.
Tested on my vanity, not on my ego.
